Mi Lindo Yucatan

Today, Porgy and I went to Mi Lindo Yucatan in the Mission District. I've been wanting to try it out because I heard good things about it. Since we were not too hungry, we decided to get an appetizer sampler to share, chicken soup and soursop horcata. My Mom usually makes me fresh soursop juice when I go home so having soursop horcata totally brought back memories of home. I really enjoyed my mid afternoon snack at this place - good food, very reasonably price, friendly staff who is proud of the food that she's serving. I will definitely come back here again to try out their other dishes.

Platillo "Mi Lindo Yucatan", a combination platter with Tamales, Panuchos, Salbutes, Flautas, Chilindrinas, Empanadas and Polcanes.

  • Tamales: Corn meal dough stuffed with chicken mixed with traditional yucatecan sauce, wrapped in banana leaves and steamed
  • Panuchos: Fried home made tortilla stuffed with black bean puree. Topped with grilled chicken, cabbage, tomato, pickled red onions and avocado.
  • Salbutes: Fried tortilla puffs topped with grilled chicken, lettuce, fresh tomatoes, pickled red onions and avocado.
  • Flautas: Fried taquitos stuffed with chicken. Served with tomatillo sauce, sour cream and crumbled queso fresco.
  • Chilindrinas: Crisp tortilla packets with hard boiled eggs and spinach. Served with tomato sauce and cheese.
  • Empanadas: Corn dough stuffed with ground beef and topped with tomato sauce.
  • Polcanes: Corn meal dumplings stuffed with a mixture of lima beans and crushed pumpkin seeds. Served with pickled red onions.
Sopa del Dia, chicken soup with pickled red onion and cabbage.

FYI, taking pictures using iPhone in this restaurant is a bit tricky because the restaurant wall is bright lime green with some turquoise-hint color. I had to photoshop the pictures to balance the colors. Next time I go there, I'll make sure to bring a digital camera!

Brooklyn and Chelsea, NYC

Some places that I checked out in New York ...

Cafe Grumpy, Chelsea - Love this place! Good quality coffee without the attitude.

Pequena, Fort Greene - Great cheap Mexican restaurant with strong margarita. Porgy thinks it has the best margarita.

Clover Club, Carroll Gardens - 1920's inspired bar with great drinks.

Egg, Williamsburg - Somewhat decent but the wait was way too long so it's just 'ehh' for me.

Roebling Tea Room
, Williamsburg - Good food, decent (not too expensive) price.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Truck - Artisan, local and organic ice cream truck.

El Norteno Taco Truck

A few days ago, Aaron and I went to El Norteno Taco Truck in the SOMA district in San Francisco. It was my first time (ever) getting food at Taco Truck. It's definitely met my expectation - delicious, tasty and inexpensive food. I had 3 yummy tacos (carne asada, carnitas & chorizo) for $4.50 total.

Pupusas

Today, I went to the Mission District in San Francisco with my coworkers for lunch. I decided to check out La Santaneca de la Mission after reading raved reviews on Yelp on their pupusas and the fact that I've been thinking about it since last week.

Since we were the only non-Hispanic people there, I had high expectation. I ordered a side of chicken tamale and a combination plate of one pork pupusa, one pork and cheese pupusa with rice and beans.

Although I liked the food and will probably come back again to try out other Salvadoran dishes, I prefer the pupusas from the Red Hook Food Vendors (at Brooklyn Flea Market) – flavor and texture wise. There are several other restaurants with good pupusas mentioned on Yelp, so my hunt for great pupusas in SF continues.

Brooklyn Flea Market

Today, Porgy and I decided to check out the Brooklyn Flea Market in Dumbo. There were lots of interesting vendors, but I was most impressed with the food.

Unfortunately, we went there soon after breakfast (Merquez spicy lamb sausage sandwich from last night's dinner with Sal at Bedouin Tent ) so we were still somewhat full.

Near the entrance, we noticed the gorgeous pastries from Choice Market.

After looking around, we decided to get the Sampler Platter from Red Hook Food Vendors to share. It had tamales, pupusas (stuffed corn tortilla), chorizo sausage, fried plantains, rice, beans and red cabbage slaw. It was delicious.

When I'm back in SF, I'll be on the hunt for great pupusas. Any suggestions?
